"If I could turn every so did I wish it into a so it was, to me redemption would be no less."
Neitzche
Generation Y is a marketing tag. Useful if you are selling music CDs or trainers but useless for thinking about politics or society.
Traditionally a generation is taken to be 33 years, the time it takes for one generation to replace itself fully. There are generally three generations alive at any one time although due to increased longevity a fourth is emergent. There are currently (a) those born before 1939 (b) those born 1940-72 (c) those born 1973-2005 (d) those born since 2006.
There is an emerging generational divide between the Saga/Baby Boomer generation and its offspring.
The baby boomers had it all, had it for free and refused to pay adequate taxes to pay for the future public commonweal. Not for nothing, the 70s were tagged the 'Me Decade'. In Harold McMillan's words the Saga/Baby Boomers 'sold off the family silverware'.
That selfish, self absorbed, generation were the original spoiled brats. Not for them the burden of student loans (their education was free) nor private finance initiatives (their parents tightened the belt and willingly paid higher taxes). They will now expect pampered twilight years.
Somebody is going to have to pay for the spendthrift ways of the Boomers. All those under 35 need to talk to each other. Those older should shut up and listen carefully.
